That quiet voice that says “you’re not enough” can get so familiar you start calling it your personality. We don’t accept that. I’m joined by Tommy Rodriguez for a grounded talk on self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and what it actually takes to shift your mindset from the inside out, especially when you’ve tried the usual tools and still feel stuck.

We dig into why mindset isn’t a one-time breakthrough but a practice you train like a muscle. Tommy shares how positive self-talk shows up in real life, like the moment you spill coffee, make a mistake, or hit a rough week and your progress feels like it disappears. We talk about how your environment, your habits, and the people around you quietly shape your mental health, confidence, and “what’s possible” narrative more than any single affirmation ever will.

You’ll hear practical mindset strategies you can use immediately: gratitude walks you actually schedule, “going to bed a winner” so you wake up with proof of progress, flipping “what if it fails?” into “what if it works?”, and building belief by doing uncomfortable things until they become normal. We also touch the deeper reframe that changes how you handle setbacks: life happening for you, not to you, and learning to choose a voice that truly belongs to you.

If you want more self-belief, stronger resilience, and a mindset that holds up under pressure, press play. Subscribe, share this with someone who’s been stuck in their head, and leave a review so more people can find Healthy Mind, Healthy Life. What’s one limiting belief you’re ready to challenge this week?

Welcome And Why Mindset Matters

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Healthy Mind, Healthy Life. I am Nasish, and this is a space where we have honest, real conversations about what it actually takes to look after your mind, not just your body. And today I am joined by Tommy Rodriguez. We and we are here diving into something so many people feel, but very few talk about openly self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and what it truly means to shift your mindset from the inside out. And Tony, I'm so glad to have you here.

SPEAKER_01

Such a pleasure to be here today. I'm really excited.

SPEAKER_00

Wonderful. So,

Tommy’s Turning Point In College

SPEAKER_00

Tommy, before we begin, I want to ask you when you say mindset is everything, I feel like that comes from somewhere very specific for you. Was there a moment in your own life where you genuinely felt that shift?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, there was. And so you're exactly right. Mindset is everything. And I think the first time I really felt that wow, mount mindset really is a make or break for my life was my last year at college. I read a book that you know really just flipped a switch in me that just really showed me how much mindset really matters and how much it will matter throughout my life. So um, so yeah, that's really how it started for me.

SPEAKER_00

That is something very beautiful. And you know, colleges do teach us a lot, I would say. So, you know, Tommy, because mindset has become such a common word these days, like you hear it everywhere. But I think there's a version of mindset, a conversation that stays pretty surface level and just like uh, you know, just like just think positive and everything will be fine. But there are so many people who often say that. So, what do you think people mostly misunderstand about what self-doubt actually is and where it comes from?

Mindset As A Daily Muscle

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so I would just say that mindset, it's a muscle. So it's like going to the gym to work out. Building your mindset is something that you want to do reoccurringly, right? So it's not something you just do once and then, oh, you're good, great mindset. You constantly have to feed your mind with positive things. So it can't be just a one-off positivity thing, but every single day you need to do something to be feeding your mind that positivity to keep the positive, great things um top of mind.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is so true. You have to keep your keep feeding yourself with better hopes and better deals so that you keep in going. And it is such an important distinction because I think a lot of people are doing all the right act exercises on the surface, journaling, affirmation, and positive thinking, and still work wondering why nothing is shifting.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, you're exactly right. And I think a big part of that is self-talk as well, right? So just as you had mentioned, you can do every single practice possible, you know, you could do the cold plunge, the sauna, the gratitude, and all of that. But if you're really just every single day not practically implementing that into your life and not letting that self-doubt creep in, that's really what we're down for there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is that is such an important distinction as well. And you know, what do you think that mis uh think that misunderstanding makes it harder for people to actually address it? Like if we were treating it as a habit when it is actually something deeper, are we working on the wrong thing?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so and you mentioned habits, habits are another great thing, and that ties right into mindset and the self-talk. So something I like to share with people all the time, you always want to talk to yourself positively, whether no matter what the circumstance is. So I hold myself to a very high standard, and I believe everyone should hold their selves to a high standard. But when it comes to the positive self-talk, right? So something as simple as if I drop my coffee and I spill it all over my lap or maybe on the road or my car or something like that, I'm not talking to myself negatively, right? I'm I'm making sure just to give myself grace in certain areas, right? So that's a big thing that people do that just kills them. They can do every practice, every mindset technique. But if they're talking to themselves negatively or treating themselves wrong, that's just gonna manifest out in bad ways.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is that is so true. And

Where Limiting Beliefs Come From

SPEAKER_00

I think limited beliefs are often things we absorbed so early that we don't even remember learning them. They're just like they just feel like the truth. So, where do you find these patterns tending to originate for people who talk you talk to?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so and I love that you mentioned that. So everyone's gonna be hardwired with self-doubt, hardwired with negativity, and that might be something that they had, you know, gotten from their family or just the environment that they grew up in, just a negative mindset. So I think it's just really important to constantly surround yourself with people with the right mindset, right? With the people that are gonna get you going in the right direction. Something I like to share with people, the mindset that you and I are in today, and every viewer watching, it just tracks back to the last three days and it tracks back to who were they talking to? Were they positive, were they negative? What were they eating? Were they working out? Were they moving their body? Were they treating themselves well, right? So all of this just all piggybacks into the mindset, self-doubt, um, limiting beliefs, all of that.

SPEAKER_00

So it is it is so true. And I love the reframe, love how you reframed it because I think it is so important we surround ourselves with people who puts positivity in our life, who keeps us going. And I believe it is so difficult to find that kind of people in our life. But once you do, you should hold on to them.

SPEAKER_02

100%. And I think, you know, a big thing I always use is you surround yourself with five people, you're gonna be the sixth, right? So if you surround yourself with five high performers, you're gonna tend to be a high performer. And I'm a really, really big believer in that. And I believe too, right? It is, it is tough, um, especially starting out, maybe to find those right people that are aligned with the mindset of who you are and who you want to become. But I would just share with you the more that you do the work and and the more you're just putting that out there, those people are gonna show up in your life, right? And it's just gonna continue to kind of spiral and they keep coming into your life. I know for me that's that's been very practical. The more that I'm doing all the right things and working on my mindset and growing and staying positive, it seems that more of those people will then in turn show up in my life. So, and I'm a really big believer of that as well.

SPEAKER_00

That is that is so true. Is that a particular kind of experience or environment that tends to plant these beliefs more deeply?

SPEAKER_02

Um,

The Top 50 List Manifestation

SPEAKER_02

so I guess I could I could share something practical with you. I know one of my mentors, uh, probably about a year and a half ago, um, I guess a little longer than that, maybe two years ago, he said, Hey Tommy, I want you to go home and write a top 50 Things I want list. And so I start writing all these crazy things on there, um, top 50 things I want. I know one of the things that I wrote on that list was become a keynote speaker, right? So I put that down on that list. I'm kind of looking it over every single day. Well, three months later, I get an email from the president of the university of my college asking me to come back and speak to the top 20 leaders in the business school, right? So just something like that, you know, stay in a line, kind of manifesting, doing the right things, and boom, that shows up. So that that's a practical example I like to share with everyone.

SPEAKER_00

That is that is so true. And you know, thank you so much for sharing that with us because it is so important for all of us to, you know, hear things which are real and practically possible. Because sometimes I think that people can get stuck in the origin story itself, like spending so much energy going back when the work is really about deciding what you are going to do with the story from your You're exactly right.

SPEAKER_02

And I like to say 60% ready, right? You don't need to have every single thing, all the ducks in a row in a line to figure things out, right? 60% ready and go do it. And uh just something I like to share with everyone as well. Everyone has their own gifts, talents, and abilities, right? There's no difference between you and I and every other person in the world. Um, you know, they were all blessed with unique talents and abilities that they could go out and use, right? So, like there's nothing separating anyone from any person at all, right? Everyone has it in them to make their dream come true, right? All those dreams were put placed in there for a reason, right? Like for you to go chase them and get them done.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, I I agree. So,

Readiness For Small Daily Moments

SPEAKER_00

how does this actually show up in someone's daily life? Like not in a big dramatic moments, but in the ordinary small ones, the the emails they don't send and the conversations they avoid, the opportunity they talk themselves out of before they have even tried.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so I would just say it's always being ready, right? It's it's just always being ready for that next opportunity. And that's why I tell people all the time, you just never know. You know, today your life could change forever. Tomorrow you could wake up. Your life could change for the better tomorrow, right? So, like just always being ready, even though if you're having a bad day or you're not feeling perfect when you wake up, just putting yourself out there to be the best you could possibly be each and every day, to give you that opportunity to then get to the next level.

SPEAKER_00

That is so important. And you know, being uh out there is something that we should all do. And taking one day at a time, it is so important to give ourselves a little appreciation to surround ourselves with that positivity that that actually keeps us going for a long way.

SPEAKER_02

And you're exactly right. I think something I could share with the viewers as well, um, what I do just to kind of keep that positive mindset going is gratitude walks. So something I like to do is take maybe 15, 20 minutes when I have some free time. And another thing, I'll put that in my schedule, right? So make sure we're putting that in our schedule to do 15 to 20 minutes, just taking a little thank you walk, thinking of all the things top of mind that I have to be grateful for. Um, you know, me having breath, my health, and just all the things that in in the busy world we sometimes overlook. I think it's important to stop sometimes and take that little gratitude walk and really see everything that we've accomplished as well as just everything we have great going for us in our life.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, I mean, thank you so much for sharing that with us. And that awareness piece feels really foundational because you can't work with something you can't see. And I think what you are offering here is actually a kind of a passion, compassionate attention, not judgment, just noticing what you need and where you can go from there.

Gratitude Walks And Going To Bed

SPEAKER_02

And you're exactly right. I think another thing that I I like to implement, I use this with my clients, I do this myself as well, is I call it going to bed a winner. So what I'll do is, you know, at the end of my day, just laying in bed, I'll think of a couple of things that I accomplished that day that I I really did well. And, you know, that way it's top of mind. So I'm waking up the next morning and those things are kind of top of mind there. Just anything to really bring those positive things top of mind. Any human being, we are hardwired just to think negatively um and just what if negative, what if negative. But I like to flip that switch to what if positive? What if it does work out, right? What if we do break through? What if we do take this to the next level? So I think that's um, you know, another reframe that I like to use as well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is so important for us to hear and to feel it as well.

Sustainable Change Through Discomfort

SPEAKER_00

So what when it comes to actually doing something about limiting beliefs, not just understanding, but like genuinely shifting them, what do you actually find that works? Not like a quick fix, but something that is sustainable.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so something sustainable, I would just say do what makes you uncomfortable, right? Uh just constantly doing something when you're uncomfortable to make you comfortable, right? I share with people all the time, you know, I speak on stages now in front of hundreds of people, sometimes thousands of people, um, one-on-one life coaching, all this crazy stuff. When I was a little kid, I used to hang on my dad's leg, right? I wasn't this like outgoing uh type guy that I am now, right? So it's um it's just always important to just do the thing that makes you uncomfortable, get comfortable doing it, and just repeat, right? Keep going and going and going. After a while, you'll just it you'll build it.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, I mean, that is so important. And you have to keep going, you have to appreciate yourself and you have to make an effort in your life because that is what truly matters. And and I and I appreciate the one thing about it is that you're not making this sound easy because it isn't. And I think that is something really reassuring about that honesty. It tells people that it hasn't that if it hasn't clicked overnight for them, that doesn't mean something is wrong with them.

SPEAKER_02

You're exactly right. And I would say to all of those people that are thinking about quitting or this isn't for me, right? The person you become on this journey is more important than anything ever, right? The group you will go through, the obstacles you'll face, everything that you'll take from that that's gonna create you into a better man or woman is just invaluable, right? I I would never, yes, it is hard, it's not easy by any means, but I would never choose any other way, right? Because of just the growth, um, everything that just the person you become, right, is just so important. And you will grow to levels that you never ever would if you didn't try to accomplish what you're trying to accomplish. So I think that's important as well.

SPEAKER_00

That is so true. So

Bad Weeks And The KFC Lesson

SPEAKER_00

also one more thing that I want to ask you like what would you say to someone who feels like they have done the work and they have come so far, but then one hard week and it brings all of a dashing back.

SPEAKER_02

I would just say keep going, right? You know, keep going, keep going. Uh, something I guess I could share, just a quick story. So um, for the viewers, if they haven't heard this one, so Colonel Sanders, right? KFC, um, you know, great, great business. So when he was 68 years old, he took his product to a thousand restaurants and tried to offer them a royalty deal. He got a thousand no's. So at 68 years old, a thousand people told him, No, your product's not good enough to even carry in in this restaurant, let alone do your own thing. So then at 70 years old, he started KFC, and now we see where that is today, just all across the world, right? So just stuff like that. It's there's never an end-all be-all. There's never anything that you can't come back from, right? You could decide that day that you're gonna start a whole new journey, new life. Just there is never ever an end-all, be all. You that's you always have that opportunity to just keep going. So that's what I would say to them.

SPEAKER_00

That is so true. And you know, keep going is what keeps us uh you know happy, positive, and surely going in our life. And I think this is the kind of answer that only comes from a lived experience, and when and I think what what you are modeling here is that something really powerful, that strength isn't absence of doubt, it is knowing what to do when it shows up.

SPEAKER_01

You're exactly right. I like that. It's good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so

Purpose Reframe And Closing Links

SPEAKER_00

Tommy, before we wrap up, I want to ask you something that I think a lot of our listeners might want to hear today. For someone who has been living in with that inner critic for so long that they have started to mistake it for their own voice, for a person who genuinely isn't sure whether what they believe about themselves is true or a story that they have been told. What would you want them to hear today?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so I would I would just want them to hear that your entire life is your purpose, right? So everyone is so caught up in, oh, am I living my purpose? Am I doing the right thing? Your entire life is your purpose, right? So every single day you're becoming the man and the woman you need to become. And everything that you're facing is for you, right? So it's for you, not to you. And that's a huge reframe I like to use. Everything that's happening is for you. It's all creating you into the person you are meant to become, to meet the people you're meant to meet and to accomplish what you're meant to accomplish in life. So I would just say everything in life is for you, not to you, and just continue to keep going. And, you know, I promise you will make it out on the other side, and great things are coming for you.

SPEAKER_00

So that is really motivating, and that is such a beautiful thing to say for anyone who is listening today. You know, the voice that tells you that you are not enough was never yours to begin with, and the work isn't about silencing it forever, it is about slowly, patiently choosing a different voice, the one that actually belongs to you and tells you to keep going.

SPEAKER_02

You're exactly right. That's really good. That's profound. That's like something I'd say here. You're taking my lines there. So I like that.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you so much, Tommy. So, for people listening who want to follow your work and deeper, know your work deeper, or read something you have written or connecting with you in some way, where can they find you?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so they could find me at my LinkedIn. Um, it's just Tommy Rodriguez. So at Tommy Rodriguez. Um, I'm sure you guys will be able to find everything from her show and stuff like that. So um, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you so much. I will make sure to include this detail in the show notes so that a lot of people can reach out to you. And Tommy, thank you so much. It was such a wonderful, exciting, and intriguing conversation to be a part of.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you so much. I really appreciate you having me today. This is a pleasure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and dear listeners, if something in this episode stirred something in you, I want you to sit with it. Don't just rush past it. This feeling is information, and this is healthy mind, healthy life, and I am Nazish. Take care of your mind, and I'll see you in the next episode.
