Lasting Loyalty Grows From Honest Motives, with Elliot Sawyer

Send us Fan Mail

Loyalty gets praised like a simple virtue, but most of us have felt the dark side of it: staying too long, keeping quiet to “keep the peace,” or confusing commitment with fear. We go straight at the uncomfortable question: is loyalty a fixed promise, or something that changes as we change?

I’m joined by keynote speaker, author, and consultant Elliot Sawyer, who argues that self-interest is the root of disengagement. When our hidden motive is transactional, what can I get, what can I extract, people feel used, even if the results look good on paper. We talk about the first real shift that creates lasting trust: motives start in the mirror. From there, loyalty becomes practical, honour people with your time, energy, attention, and resources, and choose service over ego, manipulation, or leverage.

We also explore how childhood experiences, neglect, and trauma can make us guarded, defensive, and reluctant to be generous, and why healing is often the missing link between good intentions and consistent behaviour. Then we bring it into leadership and organizational culture: how “success” can hide low loyalty, why exploiting and taking destroy trust, and what it means to do the next right thing when you mess up. Elliot shares the Johnson & Johnson Tylenol recall story as a powerful example of transparency and sacrifice creating decades of customer loyalty.
