The Hidden Cost of Getting Even | Karen Bentley
What if the way you get what you want matters just as much as getting it?
In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, Avik speaks with bestselling author, educator and WarriorSTRONG creator Karen Bentley about a deceptively simple practice: harmlessness.
Karen isn't talking only about obvious violence. She focuses on the everyday ways people use anger, sharp words, judgment, revenge, manipulation or even an irritated tone to influence other people. These reactions can feel fast and effective, but Karen argues that they often come with an internal cost.
She calls our automatic, self-protective reaction pattern the "ego robot": the part of us that immediately wants to retaliate, correct someone, label them or get even when we feel crossed.
Her alternative isn't passivity. It's creating enough awareness and pause to recognize the impulse and choose what happens next.
Karen also introduces a memorable leaking rowboat metaphor. In her WarriorSTRONG framework, harmful habits create "leaks" that drain what she calls our life energy. You might be journaling, eating well, practicing affirmations and doing other positive things, but Karen's argument is that stopping the behaviors that drain you can be just as important as adding new ones.
And her practical starting point is surprisingly manageable: choose one behavior you want to stop and stop it for five consecutive days.
Not your hardest habit. Start with something you genuinely believe you can change.
About Karen Bentley:

Key Takeaways:
- Harmlessness isn't only about avoiding obvious violence. It can involve everyday words, judgments, tones and retaliatory behaviors.
- Fast, harsh responses may produce an immediate result while still leaving an emotional cost.
- Karen calls automatic revenge, correction and self-centered reactions the "ego robot."
- The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate every reactive thought. It's to create enough pause to choose what happens next.
- Harmlessness isn't the same as letting people walk over you.
- Karen connects harmlessness with self-respect: how you behave when nobody is watching affects how you feel about yourself.
- Tone of voice can communicate anger even when your actual words appear acceptable.
- Awareness is difficult because many everyday reactions happen automatically.
- Meditation can be one tool for creating space between an impulse and your response.
- Karen's practical challenge is to stop one manageable behavior for five consecutive days and use that achievement as evidence that change is possible.
