Healthy Mind, Healthy Life
Chronic Symptoms Are Not Aging, They Are Feedback, with Lavern Dennis
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
That “new normal” of stiffness, bloating, brain fog and constant fatigue might not be aging at all. We pull back the curtain on chronic inflammation and the subtle ways it steals vitality long before it shows up as a headline diagnosis. Joining us is wellness coach Lavern Dennis, who works with people living with everyday symptoms that get dismissed, and helps them rebuild vibrant health through simple, consistent lifestyle changes.
We start where real change actually begins: mindset and belief. If you assume nothing can improve, you will treat warning signs like background noise. Lavern explains how inflammation is often your body communicating, not betraying you, and why progress is a process rather than an overnight fix. Then we get practical with the foundations: food choices, movement, restorative sleep and stress management, plus how these factors combine to shape inflammation, energy, mobility and mood.
You will hear concrete anti-inflammatory nutrition guidance, including why processed foods and added sugar can be major triggers, what “eating colorfully” looks like in a whole-food, plant-forward approach, and how small shifts can create noticeable changes in a matter of weeks. We also dig into the “CEO of your own body” idea: listening closely, resisting the reflex to only seek quick fixes, and advocating for yourself by asking better questions in medical appointments.
If you want more energy, fewer aches and a clearer head, press play, share this with someone who keeps pushing through symptoms, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What is one signal your body has been trying to tell you lately?

When Energy Quietly Disappears
SPEAKER_00Think about the last time you truly felt energetic. Not just awake, but genuinely vibrant. For many people, especially as they get older, that feeling starts to slip away so gradually that they almost forget it was ever there. The stiffness, the bloating, the constant fatigue becomes the new normal for them. What if if those symptoms weren't just inevitable parts of aging? What if they were signals that your body has been sending you all along waiting for you to listen to
Meet The Guest And The Problem
SPEAKER_00them? Welcome to Healthy Mind, Healthy Life. I am Shrimeda, and this is where we explored the real practical ways to care for your mental and physical well-being without the noise and overwhelm. And today we are talking about something that affects millions but gets far less attention than it deserves. Chronic inflammation and how it quietly steals our vitality. And joining me tonight is Laverne Dennis. Laverne, thank you so much for joining us tonight.
SPEAKER_01You're so welcome. It's my pleasure being here.
SPEAKER_00And listeners, Laverne is someone who works with people navigating those chronic symptoms like joint pain, bloating, and fatigue, and helps them reclaim the vibrant health and independence they thought they had lost for good. But do you think that's really the case, or there's something else uh we don't look into?
Inflammation Is Not “Just Age”
SPEAKER_01Great question. And no, it is not something it's it's it has nothing to do with age. One thing I always want to remind people is that we should not let age define us. In um chronic inflammation and discomfort are signals that something is going on inside the body. And so when you start having joint pains and you're having the fatigue and the bloating and all this this stuff, it's not age. It means that something is happening and it needs to be addressed before it blooms into something out of control. So what I always tell my clients is first, I need to find out from them if they believe that this can that this can change. Because mindset, belief, is so very important in making any type of lifestyle transformation. So we start with the mindset and getting them to understand that it's not an overnight fix, it's a process. So as even though that process started a while ago, people might have said, oh, it was just a couple weeks, it started a while ago, and sometimes it's a little quieter for others, but it's a process, and so we are move, we I move my clients step by step by step to so that they can experience lasting results, and what that looks like is the
Food, Movement, Sleep, Stress Basics
SPEAKER_01diet. That's the first thing that we're looking at. That's the second thing besides the mindset we're looking at because diet plays such an important role in our lifestyle, in in in in in in the way we age the things that we do, that the way we move. And then there's exercise, movement, whatever that is for that for that person. I of myself do different types of exercises, but people are different, they have different needs. And so, what I would do is encourage them, find out what it is that works best for them, and encourage them to do that thing or add a few other things to that if they're open a couple times a day. And definitely sleep. You want to be able to make sure that you're getting this restorative sleep so your body can repair while it's resting. That's when the body does most of its work while we're resting. And if you're not giving it the opportunity to take care of itself, then yes, it leads to challenges. And most last but not least least is definitely stress management. Keeping it, try to keep your stress levels down.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, and you brought the and stress management, but you know, these are certain things we uh often don't pay much heed to considering our uh present scenarios. But we are also talking about uh problems which we think are age related, maybe like inflammation, achy joints, etc. So, do you think these two can be interrelated? I mean, how do how does the one affect the other? Maybe lifestyle and uh all these affecting our problems like inflammation and uh becoming a root cause for these issues?
Processed Food And Sugar Triggers
SPEAKER_01All right, inflammation can start with things like processed food, or I should say things like processed food and um overconsumption, overconsumption of sugar attributes to inflammation. And if these are the things that you're that if this is a part of your everyday cycle, then those those things need to be reduced for sure. I always tell my clients, it's not for me, I promote a whole food plant-based diet. And basically what it is, it's eating colorfully so that you can your body will be getting all the nutrients from those colorful fruits and vegetables to decrease the antioxidant load. Now, I mean that means to decrease the the free radicals, the antioxidants is how is going to help to decrease that, and also processed food, minimal processed food, and minimal animal product, and what what your animal product should look like is lean protein, whichever protein you choose to have, but make sure it's lean protein.
Noticing Symptoms Plus A Client Shift
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, and uh you know, so how does this like uh actually show up in someone's daily life? Because oftentimes our tendency is to just push through it. So, how do you help someone recognize that it's time to pay close attention to it instead of just maybe accepting these symptoms and move on with them?
SPEAKER_01Well, again, first it goes back to their mindset. Are they ready? Because you have to be ready, you have to be ready to start making those changes. And what I do, I encourage them, I encourage them to start making changes in the diet. Because if you st if you're feeling fatigue and bloated and um brain fog, then something is going on. Let's let's start making some changes in the diet to see how that's gonna affect you. And I'm going to use my client, one of my clients, who he didn't have any conditions that you could find in the textbook. He was just his wife said that he was he was not present when he was there. And so what we did, I just made some changing changes in his diet. His sugar load was a little high, was it was a bit much, and so we helped I helped him to decrease his sugar load, um, you know, start balancing his proteins and his carbs, and doing all the things to help to decrease the um the symptoms that he was having. And within two weeks, two to three weeks, his wife started noticing a big difference in him. We didn't put him on any vitamins, we didn't put him on and he didn't go on any medication, he just needed to make a shift. That's where it starts. People have to be ready to make that shift. So, again, it's that belief, and then take action, consistent action.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, and you mentioned very correctly that it's a lot to do with our mindset and consistent action and to learn to notice what's been there all
Becoming The CEO Of Your Body
SPEAKER_00along. I think that's that's where the real change begins. And uh, Lawan, you talk about people becoming the CEO of their own bodies. So, how does this actually look like in practice? Or uh where does someone uh start if uh they have been handing that role to, let's say, everyone else for years instead of taking up to themselves?
SPEAKER_01Right. Great question. Being the CEO of your own body, you have to take time for yourself. I always say you cannot give from an empty cup. You have got to be able to take time for yourself and do the things that you need that that needs to be done to keep you fulfilled so you can continue to serve others. What that looks like is start listening. Our body will always speak to us. So we have to listen. And those little those joint pains, the fatigue, the bloating, all that stuff, it's telling us something. So when we start listening and take action and and don't be so ready to take action like taking a pill, sometimes it just causes, it just look it just needs a change in your diet, a change in your movement, a change in your your your thinking. So when I say being the CEO of your own body, we have to listen. We have to listen, and then we definitely have to advocate. Because sometimes we we we go to our doctor and they're telling us one thing, we have to explain and ask questions. It is so very important that we ask questions. It doesn't mean that you're being um some people say you're being a difficult patient. It's not a difficult patient, it's a concerned patient, a patient who wants to be informed. So ask questions. Those are the things that we do when we we are taking charge of our health and our body and being the CEO of our body.
SPEAKER_00That's such a good dream and a good way to look at it. And it's always about to be curious to ask the questions that are needed because definitely we need it for ourselves. And um, Lavan, you know, so uh how do because progress is definitely not going to happen in a straight line. So uh though change might look exciting in the beginning, it might uh just not be that uh uh progressive uh eventually, or maybe not always it's going the way we want the graph to be up as always.
Rough Patches And Staying Consistent
SPEAKER_00So, how do you s encourage people to stay grounded and keep moving forward, is especially when they have rough patches or when it feels like they are going backward?
SPEAKER_01Well, that's where I come in as a coach. Accountability. You definitely need some people might say they can do this by themselves, and they do, but a lot of people need that support. Just someone to guide them and hold their hands and tell and and and encourage them. And no, like this life is not linear. You will fall off the wagon, but the the the what's most important is not the fall, is the getting back up. So you know, having the accountability part person there to support you through the fall, the break, whatever, and just to get up and keep moving is what's needed. What's going to be um, what's going to make the change. That is where the consistency comes in. Because life happens, but we have to continue moving forward on the path.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, and I think that's that's what's most important, and learning our body's language and whatever it's trying to communicate to us is the first thing and the most powerful thing we can do for ourselves.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Totally. Uh Laman, thank you so much for having this conversation with
Where To Find Laverne And Final Takeaways
SPEAKER_00us. It was really great talking to you. And if any of our listener who is listening to this wants to learn more about your work or uh maybe to hear you explaining on this further, where do you suggest they find you?
SPEAKER_01I am at your turningpointinwellness.com. I'm also on Facebook at LaverneDennis.39 or just Laverne Dennis. I think I'm missing a dot there someplace. And I am on Instagram. Most of my Facebook information floats across to Instagram.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. I would definitely recommend our listeners. Please go have a look because uh you would be, I'm sure this would be of much help to learn more about this because learning your body's language is very important. I'm sure Lavan will be helping you with that lot. Thank you so much, Lavan, for being here today and for the work you are doing. And to all our listeners, please remember that healing doesn't mean you are doing everything perfectly all at once. It just means listening to your body a little more closely and honoring what it's telling you and taking one small step at a time because that's how a real lasting change begins, and to stay consistent with that, definitely adding to it. Please take care of your minds and until the next time, take care of yourselves, your life, and listen to what your body has to say to you. I'll meet you in another episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life very soon.
